The story of Berenice Sports Club (BSC), like most success stories, is one of ambition, passion and unbridled folly. It was born during the fall of 1994, with the union of two groups of dubious, though well-educated, footballer a team called The Dukes and a group of mostly Irish hoofers with an appetite for footie and no formal name.
The team name The Dukes was inspired by the great Wild West movie star John Wayne. The sobriquet was regal, an American icon, and duly reverent. But his estate was undoubtedly awaiting the club's imminent financial success before filing a lawsuit for copyright violation. With the infusion of new Irish talent and a reinvigorated Dukes side, individuals began to display something that some might equate to actual footballing talent. Before long, it was apparent that this new misfit crew needed a new team name. Unfortunately, all of the grand names of football, Juventus, Ajax Amsterdam and Bolton Wanderers, were taken. San Francisco United F.C. was ruled out for imbecility. There was only one thing to do: open the dictionary. In keeping with the club's taste for fanciful grandeur, names from classical history and mythology were first to be considered, with Dionysia, Oceanus, Fortuna and Tartarus leading the list. At the bottom of the list, was the name Berenice. After much deliberation and disillusion, name after name was tossed from the list. (Tartarus is the lowest region of hell). Reaching the bottom, Berenice was chosen as the symbol for the club.
The club became 3rd division champions in 1996 and gained promotion to the 2nd Division. Berenice has walked the path of glory ever since and plays in the Major Division.
In 1998, under the guidance of Erick Nordan and Bucky Boyd, Berenice again won promotion, this time to the SFSF's 1st Division. Then, in 2001, championship celebrations were on again as they won promotion to the Major Division. During this time, Berenice's recently created Reserve side was also promoted to the SFSF's 2nd Division.
For 3 years both Berenice teams showed character, class and footballing prowess. In a remarkable joint effort in 2005, both teams won promotion yet again. The Reserve side was promoted to the 1st Divison. And, on the 10th Anniversary of winning promotion out of the 3rd Division, the Berenice First Team won promotion to the CPSA Premier League, the highest attainable SFSFL league. Berenice was now playing top-flight football. With the spirit of Berenice in the stars above, the outlook for BSC is good. From its humble beginnings, Berenice Sports Club has become a San Francisco soccer institution. Looking to recruiting top Bay Area footballers and still making regular stops at the pub for a good laugh, BSC continues its tradition of ambition, passion and most of all… joy of the beautiful game.
